This book, available on Books.Google.com, was published in 1881 and it provides lots of contemporary information about the region. It is in German but brushing up on the ability to read the script or using translation software can help find unexpected information. The book also includes many table and pictures that do not require extensive German skills to assess.

This site allows you to translate a word, lengthy text, or an entire webpage for many languages and provide text or spoken output. For a webpage, enter the URL, translate it and click on the URL in the "Translate To" box for the results. A mobile app is also available that can do text recognition through your phone's camera. It also works on books printed with the old Gothic script. The translations are not perfect but can be very helpful.

This database measures the impact of inflation starting in 1914. It's interesting to how salaries, rents or home purchase prices, or assets in wills have changed. For example, the minimum wage in 1971 was $1.60 per hour which now is equivalent to $11.93 per hour and the purchasing power of dollar in 1920 would now require $15.70.

Jan and Casper Luyken were book illustrators in the late 1600 - early 1700s. The Amsterdam Museum has scanned many of their illustrations showing the life of people during their era. This is a great resource.
